Cryptic crossword No 753

Very nice crossword, thanks. I enjoyed the long down clues, especially 6D, and the way you linked the clues to 1D and 2D. Having solved these relatively quickly, it made the rest much easier! I also liked 16A, 20A, 3D and14D. I was going to complain about Americanisms, but having seen where you come from, that would be unfair! One or two indirect anagrams (ie words needing to be abbreviated in the anagram fodder), which some may complain about, but not a problem for me.

Thanks Samsa, an enjoyable solve - loved the incorporation of the four long 'uns. Favourites 8a (although aren't you running there to get away from the hellish time!?l, 11a, 13a, 23a, 3d (not sure about link word "but" I think forgivable for the surface!), 14d & 17d. Spoilers ...
