Don’t panic! All the cryptic clues can be solved normally. As for what’s going on with the special instructions… FULL SPOILERS below:

OK so I have a full (checked) grid but am no closer to resolving the SI thing! And I’m determined not to read your spoiler yet as I’d prefer to work it out… but could you possibly provide a tiny non-spoilery hint on what I need to do to make sense of the SI…? 😁

Blimey. Considering I am generally concerned by SI, the first line here left me with some trepidation. Even with a fully filled and parsed grid, I was unable to spot the device so you can consider me well beaten on that score. Nice solid puzzle with my podium being 24d, 20d and COTD 7d which is a super spot. Thanks. PM

Nice work! The Special Instructions whizzed right over my head, even after reading comments from Henri and Fez, but the puzzle itself I very much enjoyed, particularly 9a, 16a, 20a, 23a, 30a, 2d, 3d, 15d (COTD), 20d, 24d and 29d. Cheers!
