Cryptic crossword No 1,730

Thanks Yorick, haha very nice theming - needed Google confirmation for 1a, 14d & my fave 7d (in which I originally struggled to see the 'cryptic' bit!) Other highlights include 17a ("dismissing" maybe smoother?), 28a, 29a (a possessive apostrophe for "Charles"?), 6d & 27d (arguably a little "same-sidey" but makes for a super surface). A few rough edges, nothing to spoil enjoyment - could you enable annotations, to check parsings? In the meantime, with apologies for misunderstandings, spoilers...
