Cryptic crossword No 1,658

Thanks Rough ... I managed a full grid this time albeit with a fair amount of checking and several I couldn't parse, so I guess things are getting a little fairer / more straightforward! 1a (tho I'm not personally keen on the device) is nicely done; 9a good but the "up" really only belongs in a Down clue; 12a lovely tho "the" is superfluous; 26a another nice hidden, def seems a bit of a stretch; 4d my COTD - this is tough but nicely accurate; 5d, as 26a, nice but stretchy def; 6d super (ugh)...
