Cryptic crossword No 165

My first for the site, feedback is very welcome!

This is an assured debut with some first rate clues. I had ticks against 1a, 23a, 21/2, 30a, 4d, 14d. 27a and 18d were lovely bits of misdirection. 28a is neat, with a good surface and a good link to 27a. There are a few I wasn’t entirely happy with, but even those were gettable. I look forward to your next puzzle [SPOILERS IN REPLY]

I agree with Gollum - really assured and generally excellent surfaces, which can be the toughest thing to achieve. Nice shadow theme too. I had a few minor quibbles - see reply. Favourites were: 1A, 21A,/2D, 23A, 1D, 3D, 9D and 22D. Thanks!
