Cryptic crossword No 1,390

Gosh, there is some clever stuff here, Henri, most notably 16d/19d. That proved just a bit clever for me, so I can but admire. But I loved 18a (simple but great), 23a (because I'm old enough to remember!), 4d, 5d, 6d (lol). Thanks for the fun!

Lovely stuff Henri, and as Baldur said perhaps quite a bit cleverer than even your usual! Towards the upper end of your difficulty range though satisfying all over, I particularly liked 7a (smooth), 9a (likewise), 13a (clean), 18a (very good), 22a (neat), 1d (very clean), 4d (neat), 8d (nice construction) and 16d/19d (very clever indeed) - thanks for the puzzle :)

Very nice indeed, Henri. You may be putting all your cruciverbal ingenuity into the one persona now but it is delivering dividends in the cluing. Lots I could tick - a shortlist would include 9a, 18a, 22a, 25a, 1d, 2d, 6d and 14d. Beaten by 16d/19d which is very clever. Thanks. PM

Great stuff, Henri, thanks. I agree with previous commenters about the ingenuity on display. Failed to parse 16d 19d but the solution was clear enough. Lots of cracking clues, my pick being 7a, 18a, 22a, 24a, 25a (COTD), 4d and 15d. Spoiler…

This was really satisfying to solve, Henri. Took me a while to get started in each corner, but when I did most things started to fall nicely with the assistance of a few letters. Thanks! A lovely puzzle. Loved 22a 13a 18a (fun example of the device) and a few with particularly neat surface and wordplay like 24a 4d 8d. I’m determined to work out parsing for 16d 19d before resorting to notes… wonder what odds I’d get…
