Tools for setting
Hi all,
I'm curious to hear from other setters what tools they use when setting. I've recently been leaning pretty heavily on the amazing toolkit right here on MyC, but before this I've been using some other tools that have been invaluable. I'd like to share them with a brief explanation of how and why I use them, as there may be others here who could find them useful. Likewise, I'm sure there are resources out there that I would benefit from that others may be able to share. Without further ado.

An anagram generator I've been using for decades now. It isn't actually as powerful as MyC's anagram tool, but it has one major difference that I personally find invaluable. This site gives you all words you can spell with a maximum of 12 letters, but unlike MyC, it doesn't try to use all of the letters. If you enter 12 letters, it will give you all possible 12/11/10/9/8/7/6/5/4/3/2-letter words. This can be very helpful, as you might need be able to get a perfect anagram with your fodder, but WEG can give you numerous options for partial anagrams.
As a bonus, you can also enter a maximum of 3 question marks to act as blank scrabble tiles.
Crossword Genius
This is an app that has a built-in AI named Ross, designed to assist you with parsing and solving clues. Ross has a reasonably good understanding of cryptic crossword conventions, and has been fed a whole lot of puzzles. The reason I recommend Ross to setters, especially if they're just starting out or still finding their feet, is that he makes an excellent sounding board for testing out your clues. When he solves, he uses his knowledge to make several guesses, and he also rates his confidence in each as a percentage. If your clue is too difficult/unfair, he will most likely fail to parse it, or he might guess correctly but with a very low confidence rating. Conversely, if your clue is fair and easy to solve, he'll likely guess it right with a very high level of confidence.
There are also frequent mini cryptics posted in the app that can occupy a few minutes of your day.
I'd love to hear what others use. I've heard of the existence of software for example that can be used to generate completed grids. And I've occasionally seen others on here fleetingly mention sites and services they use to check whether things are acceptable.
Lastly, as grateful as I am for this site and its members who take the time to solve my puzzles, I would love to find ways to get more solvers involved. Any advice on forums to join and get involved in would be appreciated, and I'm sure there are others here who find themselves in the same boat.

I started out using Crosshare's interface, but have now shifted to QXW. The best feature of QXW is that as you build the grid, it automatically highlights which entries have become the most constrained, so you can focus your attention there and catch yourself easily before you paint yourself into an impossible corner. I don't ever want a software to fill a grid for me, and I reject all incorporation of AI into any aspect of cryptic setting or solving.
