Cryptic crossword No 54

Thanks Islander, that was a tricky solve for me taking several attempts throughout the day! Favourite clues were 20a, 26a, 5d and 11d. There's a mistake in the enumeration for 12a - it should be (8,4). I also wonder if 24 should have a question mark? I'm not quite sure how 17a fits the definition and I can't figure out the word play in 1d.

Excellent, Islander, I don't think I can see any faults except the enumeration error in 12a (which you've already explained) and, like abw, I can't parse 1d. Perhaps you can explain that last? Difficult to pick a favourite out of so many good clues. I think I'll plump for 15a because it made me chuckle! (SPOILER BELOW)....(cont.)

Thanks for this puzzle, Islander. There is lots I enjoyed, particularly the surface of 16a, the misdirection of 2d, and everything about 5d! It's a shame about the error in 12a (have you dropped a note to Raider?) and the lack of an example indicator in 24a, as these would both be wonderful clues otherwise. Many of the others were fine clues too. Quibble/Question...(SPOILER)...

FYI I've fixed the enumeration on 12a.
