See the preamble. Probably another one high up on the 'difficulty' scale. The "long 'un", from the theme, will need a bit of GK, but please persevere!

Super crossword. I didn't have the general knowledge for the long clue but I got the second and third words from the linked clues and then googled! Full of good clues, especially 7 and 8 down, which both made me laugh. 23 across also very clever. I hesitated about 29 wordplay but checked Chambers and it's fine. Also hesitated about the definition for 11 - not how it would normally be described but accurate enough! 17 down seems fine to me. Well worth digging out of the archive!
