Cryptic crossword No 424

Hi plumbwizard, only 50% through but very much to my taste so far - currently struggling to get into the SW and NE corners, but liking all clues I've solved, and nothing to apologise for as far in 13d - it made me laugh!

No need for apology with 13d, plumbwizard. I remember them as being such. Plenty of wit in this. 18a, 22a, 5d, 8d and 23d all get ticks with 15d getting big tick for delightful definition. A few liberties taken with definitions imo but you were aiming for a general theme which explains some. One unknown solution - bet you can guess which one - and one solution that should not be a word but is in Chambers! Not your fault - shame on those responsible!!!
