Hello RupertM and welcome to MyCrossword! I thought this was a splendid debut puzzle with some great surfaces carrying competent and engaging wordplay. 9a was very clever, and I’m one to accept hurt as it’s written, though others might not. 12a’s device is one I’ve only recently picked up on, but when it’s handled like this I love it! 2d was very nifty (and hopefully not offensive to anyone). 7d also wonderfully inventive.
