Hi Pentman. This was a welcome accompaniment to a long train journey. Loved all of the theme words and 1a in particular. Also a big fan of 19a (brilliant surface), 15a, and 28a which held me up for a long time until I eventually worked out what was going on

Excellent grid! I do love a puzzle with some interesting word choices. Some excellent surfaces too! Favourites are 1a, 9a, 15a, 19a, 22a, 26a, 1d, 8d, 13d, 16d, 19d and 24d

Music, cricket, gardening, geography, sex… the complete package! Very enjoyable solve, beaten only by 20a and especially liking 1a, 12a, 19a, 28a, 4d, 8d, 14d. Thanks Pentman!

Thanks Pentman. I enjoyed this too. Some lovely words (nho 11a but I like it!). Faves include 28a, 1d and 19d. If I was going to be hyper-fussy(!)...not sure I totally buy 20a - strictly speaking wouldn't it require novella to be given a capital letter in the clue? And obvs 14a requires a particular, largely US spelling of ageing, which is fine; but jars slightly for me if the very next solution (succour) is then a UK spelling (as opposed to US, succor).

Loved this. A real test of general knowledge as well as wordplay. I found the unusual words easier than the more usual ones, which I'd say means you've got the balance right. Favourites 1a, 19a, 28a, 1d, 4d, 6d.
