For an alternative route to the hidden quotation, solve this clue: Staggering lightless, a white-headed, penitent man, mumbled lines from Shakespeare (3,3,5,6,4,6,4,3,5) or (1a,6d,21a,11d,17a,30d,33a). Further info on the hidden solution can be found in the comments below (with spoilers)…

Lots of lovely wordplay, though some of it was beyond me. Alas, the theme was buried in the mists of time for me, but you sure packed it in, bravo! Some faves: 9a,21a,24a,8d,11d,15d,24d

Ah, this was something a bit different and I loved it! Used to be my favourite too until another one hinted at here took its place. Being Sisyphus I still remember the men of stones! Anyway, beautifully crafted and resonant as Old Tom. Faves included 4a, 10a, 21a, 31a, 6d, 8d, 11d, 8d, 27d. Thank you Guava!
