Cryptic crossword No 3,039

This was good! 21d my standout. 20a very clever but grammarians might have a 20a! Nice old chestnut in 1d. Had to reveal 17d then kicked myself. 6d my least favourite on ‘superficial’ grounds, but works fine. Thanks!
