Cryptic crossword No 2,628

Thanks for that, Orinoco. I found it a bit slow going in the middle - it took me longer than usual to work out the long anagrams, for example - but I managed to finish the puzzle in the end. Some of clues are quite tricky, and I got most of the last ones from guessing solutions from the crossing letters and possible definition, then parsing afterwards. My faves are: 7a, 13a, 19a, 3d, 9d. I particularly admired and enjoyed 6a, 7a, 19a, 1d & 9d. Some others I struggled with, for reasons I’ll explore in reply, but on the whole this seemed a very sophisticated puzzle with great surfaces in the clues aiding the misdirection. Quite a debut if this is your first, but it doesn’t feel like it is. More in reply (spoilers…)
