Cryptic crossword No 2,617

Good stuff Baldur, thanks. A largely steady solve with a few quite chewy elements and ultimately one reveal (17a, which I’ve heard of but know nothing about). Lots of great surfaces to enjoy. I particularly liked: 20a, 22a, 29a, 7d, 8d, 19d and 28d. Spoilers …

A good mix of difficulty, with some that kept me going for quite a while. Agree with Coot about the surfaces. A couple of NHOs, but that’s to be expected. Particularly appreciated 5a, 9a, 24a, 27a, 3d, 7d, 18d among others. I’m not keeping up with everyone’s output these days, but this was good to dip into.

Thanks Baldur, that hit the sweet spot of challenge for me, not too easy & not impenetrable. Favs were 5a, 12a, 22a, 30a, 13d, 19a, and 24d. I see that you're not beyond 'batty' surfaces with 16a 😀
