I have tried to follow a climbing/hiking theme in the clues surfaces or answers in this grid, apologies if I have used some technical terms in places

Well that was fun! I thought you maintained the hiking theme well without straining surfaces or solutions - bravo. Among my faves were 7a (neat def), 10a, 17a (cool surface) , 3d (neat), 4d (very pleased the place swam into my mind despite only ever having heard vaguely of it) & 19d - very clever

I enjoyed this immensely, EA1D. I had glanced at the puzzle earlier in the week but had other commitments so did not start it but the surfaces were very intriguing. I'm very glad I gave it a go. A few raised eyebrows and the odd repetition but the overall surface theming and then some in the solutions is very well done. It's not easy to maintain that degree of surface consistency across a whole puzzle. 9a, 10a, 13a, 20a, 15d, 18d, 21d and 22d my faves. Thanks. PM

Very good puzzle EA1stD, thanks. I agree with PM’s summary. Favourites: 9a, 14a, 22a, 27a, 5d, 6d and 19d.

Well done EA1stD, this was an enjoyable solve (and a step up from your first). I at least vaguely knew all the thematic references, but the cluing was clear in any case, which is the main thing to watch for in those cases. My picks included 9a, 15d, and 21d.

Very impressive to maintain that theme. And very credibly too. Little stories in every clue – brilliant. I think the only things missing were a rope burn and a figure of eight! Loads to like with faves including 9a, 10a and 21d
