There are some superb clues in this puzzle, my favourites being 1a, 10a, 12a, 4d, 8d, 20d. I was slightly uncomfortable with 11a because I wasn't sure that the answer actually existed as a phrase, but I see Chambers does give it. 26a is extremely clever, but I am not sure I would ever have got it without the explanation. Those, however, are two very minor cavils about a really lovely piece of work.
