The theme of this crossword is Diana Wynne Jones' 1986 novel 7a 10a 12a. As well as the titular 20a, the story features a young woman named 5d, a 22d 27a named Calcifer and the villainous 6d of the 23d. DWJ died in 2011 - today would've been her 90th birthday

Thanks Chameleon - I've no knowledge of the theme, though I've heard of it (through its film adaptation). I enjoyed solving this regardless, which is the mark of a well-themed puzzle.
