Cryptic crossword No 1,874

Thanks Yorick, that was an enjoyable solve with a good mix of clue types and a couple of chewy ones that provided that awaited ‘aha’ moment. I particularly appreciated 8a, 11a, 17a, 27a, 1d, 6d, 7d among others. Mostly smooth surfaces, although a couple seemed a bit less so. A bit more detailed discussion in reply, spoilers…

Thanks Yorick, managed to get everything in and parsed and had fun along the way. I had a few minor quibbles covered by the other commenters, but some neat ideas here. Favourite clues were 11a, 23a, 7d, 16d and 18d.
