Thanks Yorick, a good workout and lots to like - 10a, 12a, 20a, 28a, 29a, 3d, 17d, 18d, 19d among others. Some devious wordplay and a couple of NHOs made the bottom half harder for me, with a couple of reveals I came to regret but all seemed fair in retrospect.

Good fun Yorick, thanks. Mostly pretty gentle, I thought, until I struggled with the SW corner through the combination of 15d, 18d, 19d and 26a. 19a seemed obvious but I couldn’t parse it. 16a also a new word for me. Some lovely clues. Favourites: 1a, 13a, 23a, 29a, 6d, 17d, 19d (COTD) and 22d. Spoilers …

I found this a pleasant stroll, helped out by the classical refs being familiar to me, with lots of fun surfaces and good twists. 17D was my fave for the use of the def. Thanks!

I may have made the theme of this crossword a little to hidden but for anyone's who's not completely sick of politics 1d, 22d, 26a, 11a will give you a political organisation and 17d, 20a, 9d will give you its founder
