Cryptic crossword No 1,521

Oh, I see - not the sofa I first thought of! But then I guess Void's already done that one... still, my top five would have to be 9a (I've got the opposite on my "to clue" list!), 24a, 29a, 23d (pfft) & 27d. Ta for the puzzle.

Late to this one, but very nice. 17d was my favourite (can never resist a Spoonerism), but also 9a, 11a, 14a, 19a, 24a, 28a, 12d and 22d. I have to confess I still don't understand 20d even after reading your annotations, so I suspect I need to take myself off to Chambers to find out what obscure words I didn't know!
