Lovely stuff Jaspa, thanks for a fun puzzle as always - some surprises throughout indeed, and I was on a minor rollercoaster of emotions by the end! A ton of lovely clues, particularly 9a (neat and smooth), 10a (nice contextual surface), 12a (clean), 14a (very clean), 23a (very neat), 27a (superbly neat), 2d (fun assembly), 4d (very neat), 14d (neat), 16d (likewise) and 24d (fun) - thanks for the ride!

Very nice, Jaspa - a fine and fitting puzzle. Lots I liked, including 10a, 23a, and 18d, but 9a takes the top spot.
