Special Instructions: "81" by Fez. Each clue contains an extra word to be removed before solving. In order these provide an edgy little jingle attributed to a wordsmith who appears, along with another of his creations, in the grid.

This is my 81st 15x15 puzzle on MyCrossword, hence an "81" theme πŸ™‚

Wow. This is superb: fitting in the extra words, in order, plus what's going on in the grid, is setting yourself a huge challenge and yet none of the clues and (almost?) none of the answers seem forced. I was already vaguely familiar with the jingle in question - I might have found it more of a struggle if not, but as it was it was a very smooth solve. Faves 16a, 26a, 10a

Classic Fez, that - intricate, multi-layered construction and clever clues throughout. Favourites: 22a, 4d, 15d and 25d. The general theme emerged *reasonably* quickly but that didn't hamper my enjoyment one bit as there were still more specific pennies to drop. Lovely work πŸ‘

I am amazed (that you could set this) and delighted (that I could solve it). What an achievement! Like a complex machine, every part clicking perfectly. Clever clues, tricky, satisfying wordplay, some jaw dropping surfaces (1d!). There were several NHOs, but so well clued i got there. Figured out the edgy part early enough to get some help, but NHO of the wordsmith himself . Hard to pick faves, but 13a (FOI), 16a,19a,26a and 2d,8d,15d,21d

Thanks Fez for an amazing job of cramming so much into one grid. I found myself trying to solve the jingle before solving all the clues. I didn't know the wordsmith or the other creation of his until I read your notes. My favourites included 6a, 19a, 25a, 12d, & 15d. More in reply.

What a feat! Congrats on executing this puzzle, and I hope you enjoyed it as much as your solvers have. That confetti sure felt good, even if it took a long time, a fair amount of Chambers'ing, and some googling to get there. You are awesome

Phew! I do NOT find this kind of device at all easy but, eventually, it all fell into place. Not a jingle with which I am familiar so it didn't particularly help me until the latter stages when I finally knew what I was looking for. Some excellent clues but the overall Thing is the star on this occasion. If pressed, I'd nominate 18a, 1d and 8d (always love a 13 word clue!). Thanks. PM

We mere mortals, and this one in particular, are truly inadequate in your presence, Fez. To even contemplate this is beyond comprehension. But to execute it so comprehensively and with such Γ©lan is a wonder to behold. Bravo, I mean REALLY bravo. I am so bewildered by the whole idea that this is possible that I'm off for lie down!
